‘Tis the season… to think about buying gifts for your beloved pets. I know that Henrietta and Calico Zoe will get their fair share of treats under the tree. When I went to BlogPaws 2011 I picked up a few new Martha Stewart crinkle pet toys from PetSmart and they are the girls’ favorite so I will definitely be stocking up on those.
For those pet parents looking for ideas on what to put under the tree this year, we offer a few suggestions:
Clothing: Let’s face it, when we pet parents buy clothes we are doing it for ourselves but gosh-darn it, Henrietta looks adorable in everything I’ve ever bought her. If you live in an area of the country though that is cold new clothing is more than a fashion statement – it can protect your pet from the elements whether your pet is a puppy or a pony, a new jacket can come in handy. If you have a dog whose feet get chilly in the snow and ice, consider a pair of booties – these are especially helpful if you have to put rock salt on your steps to melt snow and ice because this can harm their delicate pads.
Gourmet dog treats: For the holidays, splurge on gourmet or organic treats for your pet. Homemade cookies, doggie cupcakes or even high quality pieces of fish bits for your cat could be on the menu. If you’re a cook, try your hand at whipping up a batch of gourmet treats for your dog or cat – there are many doggie cookbooks on the market.
Spa pampering: A day at the spa may not seem like something your pet will enjoy and it could just be a treat for your senses when she comes home smelling like a gardenia. There are dog salons where you can take your beloved for a bath, grooming, massage and toenail painting. Imagine how cute she will look for her pictures with Santa if her toenails match her dress!
A new bed or carrier: Is your pet a world traveler? When’s the last time you upgraded his pet carrier? Check out Vera Bradley for great quilted pet carriers or if you’re into leather, go for Louis Vuitton. When it comes to comfort at home, upgrade your pets bed. What cat or dog wouldn’t like a new bed that’s covered in a luxury fabric?
Bling: A bejeweled collar or a new luxury leash could be just the upgrade you’re looking for when you are out walking your pet. There are collars that come in myriad shapes, colors and designs and are made by high-end designers for the discriminating pooch’s owner.
High tech: In addition to the high end items you can purchase for your pet, you can add to his or her safety and security with high tech gadgetry such as a microchip or a collar equipped with a GPS tracker. If you travel with your pet, there’s always a chance he or she could dash off in an unfamiliar place and a GPS equipped collar can help you track him down.
Regardless of the toys and gifts you have under the tree for your pet, what they really want from you is your love. Let’s face it, they give to us unconditionally year-round so if you don’t plan to deck the halls with a lot of gifts for them, give them an extra snuggle or pat on the head – it is really all the gift they need!
