Ol Roy dog food Reviews, Recalls and Coupons

Overview

Brief Overview: Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart, once had a dog named Ol’ Roy. He wanted to create and sell some dog food named after his dog, so he launched Ol’ Roy dog food in 1983. Today, it’s sold exclusively at Walmart.

Has this dog food brand been recalled?: Ol’ Roy dog food was deeply affected by the melamine pet food recall of 2007. Ol Roy jerky strips, dog treats, canned dog food, and dry dog food were pulled from the shelves. Not only that, but in June of that same year, they found that their Complete Nutrition Dry Dog Food was contaminated with salmonella, so they had to issue another recall.

Ol Roy dog food Reviews

Judging by its ingredients alone, Ol’ Roy appears to be a poor quality dog food. – Mike Sagman @ Dog Food Advisor

A lot of health-conscious dog owners avoid Ol’ Roy like the plague because this brand of dog food has no nutritional value whatsoever. The number one ingredient found in Ol’ Roy dog food is corn. It’s usually followed by other unhealthy fillers like soybean meal, wheat, and corn syrup.

Poultry fat, chicken by-product meal, and animal digest are far down the ingredients list, and they’re not even good sources of protein. If that’s not bad enough, it’s preserved with BHA, a chemical known to cause cancer in dogs and it tested positive for pentobarbital, a chemical used to euthanize animals, in 1998.

As you can see, Ol’ Roy produces cheap grain-based dog food with carcinogenic elements, so it’s safe to say that Ol’ Roy dog food could cause more harm than good to your dog’s health. We don’t even feel comfortable giving Ol’ Roy dog food one star, because it’s more deserving of zero stars.

Sample Analysis

When it comes to dog food, it is important to check all ingredients listed on the product label as it helps us determine the quality of the food. While we cannot judge the quality of each raw material, the list of ingredients combined with the guaranteed analysis provides us with the means to rate every dog food product out there.

We are taking a closer look at Ol’ Roy Complete Nutrition Dog Food in this analysis. Note that other products may vary in terms of ingredients and quality, so make sure you check out their product labels carefully before you buy the product.

  2. Meat and bone meal

Controversial ingredients

Ol’ Roy’s Complete Nutrition dry dog food has one of the highest counts of controversial ingredients that we have ever seen in dog food.

  1. Ground Yellow Corn is another inexpensive item that has only modest nutritional value to dogs.
  2. Meat and Bone Meal does not mention an animal source which means that it can come from nearly anywhere, including roadkill, spoiled meat or dead livestock. It can have lower digestibility than other meat meals.
  3. Soybean Meal is rich in protein but has a lower biological value than meat-based protein sources.
  4. Poultry by-product meal is a slaughterhouse waste product that is made from leftovers that are unfit for human consumption.
  5. Animal Fat fails to mention the type of animal, which means it can come from nearly anywhere including roadkill, spoiled meat, or dead or deceased animals. This particular type is preserved with BHA, a suspect cancer agent.
  6. Corn Gluten Meal is a by-product of corn once the starchy carbohydrates have been washed out. It is high in protein but of lesser value than meat based proteins.
  7. Brewer’s Rice is a by-product of the rice milling process that consists largely of small left-over fragments. It is of modest nutritional value to dogs.
  8. Added Colors are of no use other than to make the food look more appealing to humans.
  9. Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex contains a controversial Vitamin-K form that is linked to allergies, the abnormal break down of red blood cells, and liver toxicity.

The first six ingredients listed on the product label are all controversial. You will also notice that it only contains a modest amount of meat, and that the meat that it does include, is lower in quality than named meats.

Much of the protein in the product comes from plants and not meat sources. The controversial ingredients, including one suspected cancer agent, confirm the impression that we have had during the review.

This is a below average product that we do cannot recommend at all.

I have two little puppies that are two months old. They are full of energy and last night they were just staying in there little doggy bed with no energy whats so ever. In the morning I went to feed them and when I saw there doggy pee pad there was diarrhea and blood everywhere! I was freaking out because they are my little babies. I didn’t know what it could be and the only thing I can think of is there dog food because I don’t give them treats. So I googled O’l roy products and low and behold all there symptoms are the same as my babies. The pathetic thing is o’l roy can see all these complaints and they still dont do anything about it. I dont want any stupid coupons or discounts. They need to realize they are harming and killing our beloved animals. It may be just dogs to them but they are family to us.

    WARNING TO ANY FUTURE BUYERS:
please please please DON’T even consider o’l roy brands because they are going to hurt your little babies! And all the reviews and complaints you see are ALL correct. The company needs to do something about this because it is ridiculous!!!! I don’t want any of these things to happen to anyone elses dogs and for those whos dogs passed away because of o’l roy I am deeply sorry but you guys did the right thing to post about it. We all can try to prevent any more of these happenings by not buying it.

Please click on this site and petition for O’l roy to be banned!

I bought a bag of Old Roy Dog Food (the kind that is comparable to Gravy Train) last week from Walmart. Since then, my 12 year old Shepherd has been having violent episodes of diarrhea and she’s crying all of the time. I noticed (a little more than a few days ago) that she has been wanting to go outside to relieve herself more frequently than normal and I finally got a look at it when she accidentally defecated in the house and found that there is blood in her stool. The only thing that has changed in her diet is that I started feeding her the Old Roy Dog Food that I bought last week. It pains me to see my dog suffer and I am completely HORRIFIED by all of the posts on this site….My puppy has blood in her stool too…I’m praying that they make it through this…I cut them off from Old Roy and I’m going to the store to buy hamburger to boil and serve with rice as suggested by her vet..if that doesn’t help her, I’m taking her in to her vet for blood and stool testing…which I cannot afford!! Hence, having to buy cheap dog food in the first place…My older dog has been a member of my family for 12 years!!! If something happens to her, I will be devastated!!! DON”T BUY OLD ROY DOG FOOD!!!

When i first got my puppy she would sniff the ol’ roy puppy food, take a bite, and throw it up. We tbought maybe it was just because it was new food, stupid me let this continue for a few days. I switched her to blackwood dog food and haven’t looked back. Yes its expensive, but it cheaper than vet bills and carpet cleaners every week

I was feeding this brand to my dog and he seemed to be getting sick a lot. Once I switched he stopped getting sick. I don’t know if it was due to the food or not.
