Wow! This was a fantastic post. Illinois is not alone for beagles getting the boot -- it happens in the South, and in Long Island, NY too! And I don't understand it. Beagles are so wonderful. I love my Lulu, and everytime I hear of one of these cases, or read about the Beagle Freedom Project, I just want to jug her tighter.

Comment on Why You Should Always Adopt a Pet From a Rescue or a No-Kill Shelter by Brent

I think you've way over-simplified this. While many "no kill" shelters go above and beyond, many simply are no kill by controlling intake. I know of others that really don't save pets from their local kill shelters, but simply import them in from other communities where they have a nice selection of "highly adoptable" dogs.

Meanwhile, there are some pounds and lower-kill shelters that work their butts off to save lives, even as open intake facilities save a lot of lives. I know of kill shelters in communities with small budgets that save as many lives as no kill shelters that have 5-6x their budgets because they operate with sense of urgency the limited intake shelters don't have.

I guess the bottom line is you should do more research than that, and look for an organization that is maximizing its resources to save lives (and not raising more money for non-life-saving things), know how the organization gets its animals, and how they care for them. I think you'll find good and bad across all four groups.

Jake (short for Jamaican Me Crazy): this was actually his breeder/show name and when I adopted him I thought it fit (he is the loudest cat ever)

Maus (German Spelling for Mouse, sounds the same): Art Spiegelman created a graphic novel called by the same name. It is a story about The Holocaust where the oppressed (Jews, Gypsies, Homosexuals) are portrayed as Mice and the Nazi are Cats and other animals. I'm a Jewish convert and I thought naming my cat Maus because she was diminutive and converted from her evils ways was appropriate.

Moshe Moshi: The first Moshe is Jewish for Moses. His show name was Santos Moses. Moshi is a Japanese word, kinda. Most of my Japanese friends/family answer the phone "Moshi Moshi" which is not the word for hello. I was told by an Aunt that Moshi was supposed to be a sound that only human people could make so you say it when you answer the phone so that the person on the other end knows you’re a real person and not a robot or alien. Sphynx Cats are often accused of looking like Aliens, thus the name.

Thanks for the information. Truffle tends to eat a little fast, so I've watched how much I feed her. She also gets a high quality canned food in addition to her dry food and she is doing much better.
